According to the 2017 figures from the Cancer Information Center of the Hospital Authority, colorectal cancer continues to be the number one cancer, with 5,635 new cases, which means that on average, more than 15 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer for the first time every day. Preventing bowel cancer mainly relies on healthy living and eating habits, but there is also a more practical way, which is to undergo early&nbspcancer screening<\/a>, such as undergoing a colonoscopy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


In fact, great progress has been made in the diagnosis and treatment of bowel cancer in recent years. For example, in the past, only chemotherapy drugs were available for advanced colorectal cancer, but now not only are there a variety of chemotherapy drugs, including oral and injectable drugs, but there are also different chemotherapy drugs that can be used in combination to increase the efficacy. For colorectal cancer cases that are suitable for the use of targeted drugs, the efficacy of chemotherapy plus targeted drugs is often better than the use of chemotherapy drugs alone. There are many clinical cases where patients with advanced colorectal cancer can have a longer survival period by using chemotherapy plus targeted drugs.

Although there have been so many advances in treatment, one of the main factors that affects whether patients can obtain a radical cure is whether bowel cancer can be detected early. If it can be discovered in the first, second, and third stages, the chance of radical cure is certainly higher. Even if it is already the fourth stage (that is, it has spread), whether there is a chance of radical cure with diagnosis and treatment depends on whether it can be discovered in the early stage of the fourth stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, many countries have been advocating colorectal cancer screening in recent years. The Hong Kong government currently provides faecal occult blood tests for citizens aged 50 and above. If the test result is positive, they will be referred for a colonoscopy. Citizens can also opt for colonoscopy screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colonoscopy can be said to be the number one weapon for screening bowel cancer because it allows doctors to see clearly the conditions inside the intestines directly through the lens. Therefore, whether there is inflammation, polyps (which may develop into bowel cancer) or cancer, they can be seen immediately. If there is a polyp, it will usually be removed immediately to avoid future problems. If cancer has already occurred, a colonoscopy may be used to remove part of the tumor tissue and conduct tests before deciding on a diagnosis and treatment plan. If there are no signs of polyps or cancer, colonoscopy can be performed 5 to 10 years apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, colonoscopy is the most accurate method for detecting bowel cancer and the most effective way to prevent polyps from turning into bowel cancer. If citizens want to know whether they need it, they can consult a doctor in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
