How Can I Help My Puppy Choose Its Dog Food?

When you are thrilled to have a new furry friend in the house, remember to take good care of its food, clothing, accommodation and travelling, especially food. Eating the wrong things by accident may affect its development and even health! So before you start feeding your puppy, here are 3 tips you need to know to choose the best dog food.

1/ Choose a nutritionally balanced dog food

A balanced and nutritious diet is what puppies need most. High protein, high-fat foods are particularly important during the developmental period (before the age of one). Therefore, choose foods made from fish such as chicken, beef and salmon, which are high-quality animal proteins that can be easily digested and absorbed. You can also choose dog food with special ingredients such as crude protein and DHA, which are essential for puppies. But consult your vet if your dog has any health problems and if he/she can take these nutrients.

2/ With international certification

If you are a novice dog owner and already have your hands full with your puppy and are confused about food choices, then we recommend choosing products from major internationally accredited brands, e.g., products with international certification from AAFCO (The Association of American Feed Control Officials). These are rigorously tested diets that meet the nutritional standards for puppies and can be used as the major source of food. Different brands of puppy food are fed in different ways, so it is easy to give the right amount of food by referring to the feeding instructions on the packaging.

3/Feed hardness and size

The size of the diet should vary depending on the size of the puppy. You should choose a diet that is suitable for your puppy's size. For example, if you have a mini dog, you should choose a diet with smaller particles that they can eat.

When the puppy's teeth are not yet fully developed, too hard a diet may not be chewed, you can soften the dry feed and flatten it with a spoon, or provide it in a can so that it doesn't cause vomiting if swallowed.

Puppy food is usually consumed until about one year of age, after which it is replaced by adult food. Have fun with your little furry friend and grow up fast and strong!
