Dry eye symptoms and causes

Dry eye syndrome is an eye disease that is quite common. The main symptoms include dry eyes, burning sensation, foreign body sensation, fatigue or blurred vision. It usually affects our daily life. If the situation becomes serious, it may cause corneal damage and impaired vision.

In the past, dry eye syndrome was more common in the elderly, but in recent years, 3C has been used more and more in daily life, and dry eye syndrome has become more and more common in younger people. In addition to age and 3C products, dry eye syndrome may occur if tears evaporate too quickly or have abnormal composition.

How to prevent dry eye syndrome

To prevent dry eye syndrome, you can start from the following aspects:

1. Limit the time you use your eyes:

Ideally, the time you use your mobile phone every day should be limited to 2 to 3 hours. At the same time, use the "20-20-20" rule, look at distant objects at least 20 feet (about 6 meters) away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes, and divide the screen time into segments to relieve eye stress.

2. Environment and lighting:

Make sure to reduce exposure to dry, smoky or windy conditions, such as those caused by air conditioning. At the same time, the screen brightness of the electronic device should be moderate, and ensure that the anti-blue light screen or eye protection mode is turned on. When looking at the screen, make sure your eyes are at least 30 to 40 centimeters away from the electronic screen.

3. Get enough nutrients:

Vitamin A and Omega-3 fatty acids can all help keep your eyes healthy, so make sure you get these nutrients in your daily diet.

Diagnosis and treatment of dry eye syndrome

Dry eye syndrome is usually diagnosed by examining the ocular surface and tear film with slit lamp microscopy and performing a tear secretion test (Schirmer test) or tear film break-up time (TBUT). Treatment includes Intense Pulsed Light,  the use of preservative-free artificial tears, hot compress, lifestyle and environmental changes, and anti-inflammatory drugs etc. If the condition is severe, surgery may be required.
